Emma Burrows

Psychotherapist: (Hawai’i LMFT #796); CA Youth, Parent, & Family Coach

I believe that healing and growth can come from creative places – from developing a nourishing relationship with nature, engaging in expressive arts, tuning into body and mind through yoga, breath, and mindfulness, and developing tangible tools for healthy communication and meaningful relationships. I also believe that balancing the nervous system is essential to any healing. If we feel safe, we can do our deepest and most meaningful work. My own journey of healing and growth informs my approach.

I have over ten years of experience working with adolescents, emerging adults, and families in therapeutic, educational, and outdoor recreation settings. My work is strengths-based, person-centered, and trauma-informed, while utilizing expressive arts, a depth perspective, and the healing power of nature. I bring a calm, compassionate, curious, and non-judgmental approach to my work with individuals and families. I enjoy co-creating space for meaning-making and healing, working through stuck areas together, and developing creative tools for managing life's stressors. I believe that coaching and therapy can be fun, collaborative, and creative – it can lead us into the depths of our challenges and also provide moments of levity and meaningful insight. My approach is to trust in your innate wisdom and offer gentle support and guidance along the way.

I received a B.A. in Psychology from Wesleyan University and a M.A. in Counseling Psychology and Expressive Arts Therapy from the California Institute of Integral Studies. I’m a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in the state of Hawai’i and have trained in depth-oriented Sandplay Therapy. My additional training and background as a yoga teacher and Ayurvedic Health Counselor, informs the holistic framework that I bring to my work with clients. I have extensive experience working with youth and their families in times of crisis, including working in a residential program centered on horticulture therapy and rites of passage. I work with LGBTQIA+ youth, neurodivergent individuals, people struggling with anxiety, depression, body image, identity formation, life transitions, existential angst, and relational challenges.

Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with animals and nature, cooking nourishing food, making art, practicing yoga, hiking with my husband, and getting to know my community in Nevada City, CA.
