Joseph Weinstein
Psychotherapist: LMFT #144901
I offer a grounded person-centered approach to therapeutic work that is highly collaborative and rooted in depth psychology, the healing power of nature, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and mindfulness. I provide a therapeutic experience that is authentic, compassionate, and non-directive. A key component of ACT is gaining a clear understanding of one's core values and then committing to live congruently with those values. I particularly enjoy utilizing ACT with adolescents and young adults as I find that many of us have yet to clarify our own most important values. This process can be quite revealing and begin to inform the direction of each soul's true north, unlocking vitality and dormant energy. As a therapist, I do not believe it is for me to tell others how to live their lives but rather to collaborate together in a sacred process to uncover the answers and acceptance of self their souls may be longing for. I trust each individual’s ability to move towards their own potential and have a deep passion for the often non-linear, mysterious process of therapy. I have enormous respect for those willing to embrace their own vulnerability and embark upon the dynamic and challenging journey of therapy.
I have had the privilege of working with children and teenagers in seven different schools across Tahoe Truckee Unified School District. Very common and frequent clinical issues included anxiety, depression, PTSD, suicidality, self-harm, and gender dysphoria. Prior to my work in Tahoe, I worked at Counseling Services at University Nevada, Reno providing therapeutic services to undergraduate and graduate students struggling with a variety of stressors related to the transition into adulthood. I am truly honored that clients have entrusted me with their struggles and vulnerability, allowing me to play a small role in their human journey.
I earned a B.A. in International Economics with an emphasis on Japan and Japanese culture from University of California, Los Angeles and an M.A. in Counseling Psychology with an emphasis on depth psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Carpinteria, California. I spent four years traveling Southeast Asia and South America studying meditation and yoga, surfing, and hiking. This soulful walkabout broadened my understanding of the human experience as well as my appreciation for the many ways to find meaning and happiness in life. I have been in practice since 2019 and have a passion for working with children and adolescents, especially outdoors doing nature therapy in beautiful Tahoe. I also enjoy working with adults who may be struggling with a phase of life issue or need support through a difficult transition. I am licensed in the state of California as a Marriage and Family Therapist.
I am a long-term Tahoe resident with an enthusiasm for the outdoors. When I am not working with local clients you are likely to find me on a snowboard, mountain bike, paddle board, yoga mat, or local hiking trail with a slightly, silly smile on my face… oh, the power of nature! I feel deeply grateful to call Tahoe home.
